Xiamen Grand Hyatt
Xiamen Baojia Center is located in downtown Xiamen between the streets of Lujiang and South Xiti Roads. The City of Xiamen has initiated strict controls on building setbacks, sunshading, and building height in response to the residential and office tower nearby. The tower consists of a hotel brand Grand Hyatt and a Retail Podium.
The architectural concept was inspired by the coral atoll forms found in the South China Sea. Similar to the coral atoll forms, each level provides diverse programmatic activities and life to flourish within and surrounding site. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef including a coral rim – with coral islands – that encircles a lagoon. A group of island-like pavilions can be found on the rooftop garden.
Other ideas that further strengthen the design concept is interpreting the sound of ocean waves hitting the beaches and reefs of Gulangyu Island. “Gu Lang” translated means musical “drum waves” because of the sound generated by the ocean waves hitting the sand and reefs. The architectural facade represents the subtle wave motion found on the Gulangyu Island beaches.
