Project Description:

This prime site is located on the famous 16th street pedestrian mall in downtown Denver, Colorado.  The program brief, to enlarge the hotel by overtaking the adjacent surface car park site owned by the client.

The challenge when working in a historic district, is to honor the surrounding context without copying the historical buildings.  To achieve this the Modern addition looked into the historic past of Curtis Street to uncover the Entertainment period of the early 1900’s and discover a topological geometry of the semi-dome entrance that was so prominent during this time period.

What was then developed was a modern interpreting of this formal geometry to produce a large elongated, parabolic dome exterior drop off zone. The geometry and formal strategy then create layers of space in different types of applications all the way throughout the building until finally arriving at a canoe shape cantilevered pool at the roof deck level.
